Contrary to racing pigeons which participate in racing competitions, the breeding of fancy pigeons has as principal aim the outward ideal appearance. These are exhibition birds which must answer certain race criteria ; this does not however mean that every fancy pigeon fancier is compelled to participate in these exhibitions. The aim to preserve the many species can in fact best be reached by keeping the fancy pigeons-pure bred.
Relative to feeding we establish large differences in caring system of racing pigeons as opposed to that fancy pigeons. The caring system of racing pigeons is primordially chosen in function of the efforts the pigeons must deliver during the racing season. The nutrition of fancy pigeons on the other side is more directed to the physical properties of the various species: short-billed pigeons, very heavy chicken pigeons, species with pale eye rings,...
A specific fancy pigeon food range was therefore developed.
